Guest photos

We were fortanate to have 14 guest from the States to share in the 50th celebration.

When not attending the planned events most of their time was spent visiting and remembering the days that were.

Some took walks though town, visited an orpahage and the agricutlural project.

It was very interenesting learning about the history of the hospital and work in Haiti.

Sunday Afternoon 50th- more photos

Songs by several choirs praising the Lord.

Pastor Dan and Joy put a lot of work into this celebration, both as field directors, managing the guest house and advising the leadership.

Lots of smiles.

Sunday Afternoon 50th.

On Sunday afternoon hundreds of people gathered in the middle of the Wesleyan compound.

A large tarp had been put up providing shade in front of a platform that had been made for the occasion. Everyone was dressed in their Sunday best. Singing and speeches were the order of the afternoon and lots of pictures by the visitors. There were people from the mainland as well as the States who had traveled to LaGonave specifically for this celebration.

Speakers represented government officials, other organizations, patients, staff, missionaries, and churches.

The afternoon was warm and unfortunately before the speeches could be completed a storm blew in off the sea. A meal had been prepared for those in attendance but the storm cause the meal and good byes to be rushed.

Saturday: Staff Breakfast, New Office Dedication

Saturday morning following the morning chapel service everyone walked across the road to the nursing school.

The guest house staff had prepared a Haitian breakfast of rolls and spaghetti for the medical staff, past and present.
One gentleman shared how he started to work for the first missionary family when they arrived and how the Lord had changed his life.

Following breakfast everyone went into the new addition to the school which will serve as the new hospital office.
The location was prayed over dedicating it to the Lord. More songs of praise were lifted up to the Lord.

Met. Roosevelt in what will be his new office. The current location of the office is in one end of the building that is used to house guests.

Purpose of LaGonave Wes. Hospital.

The purpose of the La Gonave Wesleyan hospital is to communicate the love of Christ through caring for the sick,

promoting preventive medicine,

proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ,

and training Christian care-givers and technicians.

The new painting on the hospital wall facing the street testifies to the care given at the hospital with:
consecration, compassion and competence.

Open House at the Hospital. New Sign

On Saturday there was a chance for people to see the hospital and clinic. The staff had done a marvelous job of cleaning, fixing and landscaping the grounds for the celebration.

New sign out by the road.

Be part of the 50th celebration without leaving home.

  1. Become a prayer partner: pray about the arrangements that need to be made for visitors; that repairs and projects can be complete before the celebration; that those who want to come can find the resources, time and strength for the trip; for wisdom; that the Internet continues to work; that the medical work can continue to provide quality care in the midst of the repairs and business of preparation.

  2. Send an E-mail, letter or note of encouragement. See the "Praise Book" blog for further information.

  3. If we are able to find someone to organize and copy old pictures and slides we will be asking for your best pictures to be copied to a DVD to be viewed during the celebration.
  4. Send contributions to Global Partners earmarked for the LaGonave 50th Anniversary. This money will be used for repairs and refurbishing the hospital and clinic.

Where would I stay?

Details about housing will be clarified closer to the actual dates of the celebration.

Some plans are depended on how many people wish to join us on LaGonave for the celebration.

And any one who has been to Haiti will tell you that you need to bring: flexibility, patience and a large sense of humor.

There will be housing for about 25 people on the mission compound. People with special needs will be given priority. Cost will be $20 a day for room and meals.

If additional housing is needed there are local 'hotels' for overflow. The local hotels start about $22 [without meals and only electricity in the evening] and increase to about $85 for air conditioning all night. If you wish to still eat with the others on the compound the cost will be $12 a day.

At this time it is planned that all meals will be provided on the mission compound.
Breakfast: 7 a.m Lunch:12 p.m. Supper: 5 p.m.

The first meal that is planned is supper on Wednesday, June 25.

If at all possible you should plan to arrive on Wednesday and leave Monday, June 30th. Those who are thinking about a different schedule may contact us and we will do our best to accommodate your needs.

If you are thinking about attending the 50th Anniversary please let Dr. Kris Thede know by commenting on this post or E-mail, ASAP. You should hear back in a couple of days and if you don't please contact her again.

Why celebrate the 50th year of ministry?

Why go through the trouble to plan a 4 day celebration of the 50th year of medical ministry on LaGonave?

  • To honor God and testify to His faithfulness and blessings over the past 50 years

  • To honor the hard work and sacrifices of His faithful servants

  • To inform and educate the community and others about the history, services, and vision for the hospital and medical outreach.

  • To open greater dialog

  • Create a data base of friends and supporters

  • Reconnect with people and fellowship

  • Strengthen and form strategic partnerships

  • Honor past and faithful supporters

  • Develop a network of suppliers and available services

  • Share needs and future plans for hospital improvements

  • Reacquaint employers, missionaries and supporters.

Why does the LAG hospital exist?

This question was asked to some of the employees who are involved in preparations for the celebration of the 50th year of the Wesleyan medical work on LaGonave. Here are their responses.

  • Visible and defining ministry of the Wesleyan Church in Haiti

  • Practical demonstration of God's love and mercy.

  • Obedience to Jesus' commandment to serve those in need.

  • Evangelism

  • Model Christ's own ministry priorities by treating the sick

  • Training and development of people as leaders to benefit and bless both the church and the community.

  • Best source of training and information on LaGonave for health and nutrition.

  • To bless the people of LaGonave.
